Does it matter if you use FrontPage or Dreamweaver when building your website? Does using code like Java prevent you from having a fast website?
I use Dreamweaver. Function-wise, FrontPage does what it's supposed to, but I think Dreamweaver is superior. As for using Java and other programming languages, I don't know for sure. I use some Java Applets for navigation on a couple of my sites, and I know they perform slower on AOL on my modem connection. For a fast website, the best thing to do is stay away from gizmos that will make your page download slower. In web design, “plain Jane” isn't all bad. |

How do you create PDF dialog boxes? |
|
I've been to several sites where I can download a PDF file by left clicking on it and having the download dialog appear. On my site, if you left click a PDF file, the Acrobat program loads. You have to right click a PDF file on my site and select “save target” or something to that effect. I would like to just left click and have the download dialog appear. What should I use as code to accomplish that approach.
Here are some general rules on PDFs:
- You can NEVER guarantee they will download into the browser window, because it is a user setting, which is dependant on the plug-ins or other controllers they have set.
- There is one way I know of to guarantee the full download of a PDF. That is to either Zip (PC and Mac) or Stuff (Mac) the file first.
- The browser you use will also affect how the PDF downloads. It may download fine in Internet Explorer, but open the Acrobat plug-in for Netscape.

Is there another way to get addresses of those who might be interested? |
|
Could you please give me some ideas on getting an e-mail list. No one is leaving their e-mail address on my website. Is there another way to get addresses of those who might be interested?
What listserv are you using for your e-mail list? Are you making it difficult for people to subscribe? Also, what are you offering potential subscribers? Are you sending your subscribers a unique newsletter with interesting and valuable content, or a page of ads? There is so much competition for subscribers that I believe you must give them something they can't get somewhere else. Ask yourself this question: Would you subscribe to your newsletter? |

I was wondering if you could give me advice on writing a contract. |
|
I am currently starting an Internet marketing company and can't afford a lawyer for $125 hour. I was wondering if you could give me advice on writing a contract.
There is a book that you should read entitled, Starting A Home-based Web Design Business, that provides a sample contract that may meet your needs. You should also take a look at the Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines. |

I was curious how you exchange links. |
|
I do it manually. I don't recommend automated programs, because many search engines consider them spam. Search engines like Google—that place high relevance on link popularity—gauge a site's importance by the quality of links versus quantity. |
